What You'll Be Able to Do After This Article

By the end of this article, you'll have your own Claude account and you'll have had your first real conversation with AI. No technical setup, no complicated steps — if you can send a text message, you can do this.

If you read our previous article, "[AI Isn't Scary — How Claude Can Make Your Life Easier]((/articles/claude-ai/ai-is-your-friend-claude-intro)," you already know what AI is all about. Now it's time to try it for yourself.

Three Simple Steps to Get Started

Step 1: Open the Claude Website

Open your web browser — Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or whatever you normally use — and go to:

https://claude.ai

Type this address into the bar at the top of your browser and press Enter. You'll see Claude's welcome page.

Step 2: Create Your Account

You'll see a "Sign Up" or "Get Started" button on the page.

If you have a Google account (Gmail): Click "Continue with Google" — it's the easiest way. Just select your Gmail address and you're done.

If you don't have a Google account: You can sign up with any email address. You'll receive a verification code via email — enter that code on the screen and you're all set.

Account creation flow:
1. Go to claude.ai
2. Click "Continue with Google"
3. Select your Google account
4. Agree to the terms of service
5. Done! You can start chatting immediately

Step 3: Say Hello to Claude

Once you're logged in, you'll see a text box at the bottom of the screen. Type your message there and click the send button (the arrow icon). That's it — you're chatting with AI!

Start with something simple, like a greeting.

Your First Chat — What Should You Ask?

"What should I even say?" is a question many beginners have. The answer is: anything at all! But here are a few great conversation starters.

Starter #1: Ask Claude to Introduce Itself

You: "What kinds of things can you help me with?"

Claude: "I can help with quite a few things!
         Writing letters and emails, explaining
         confusing topics, brainstorming ideas,
         translating languages, and much more.
What can I help you with today?"

Starter #2: Ask for Dinner Ideas

You: "I have chicken, onions, and potatoes in my fridge.
What can I make for dinner?"

Claude: "Great ingredients! Here are some ideas:
         1. Chicken curry (ready in 30 minutes with curry sauce)
         2. Roasted chicken with potatoes (classic comfort food)
         3. Chicken stew (just let it simmer — easy!)
Which one sounds good? I'll give you the full recipe."

Starter #3: Ask About a Confusing Word

You: "I keep hearing the word 'inflation' on the news.
Can you explain it in really simple terms?"

Claude: "Sure! Inflation means that prices for things
gradually go up over time. If a loaf of bread
cost $3 last year and costs $3.30 this year,
that's inflation. It basically means your money
buys a little less than it used to."

Helpful Tips to Remember

Tip 1: Be Specific

The more details you give Claude, the better its answers will be.

△ Vague: "Tell me something good to eat"
◎ Specific: "My wife and I are visiting Kyoto.
             We love traditional Japanese food.
             Can you recommend 3 restaurants?"

Tip 2: Ask for Simple Explanations

When dealing with complex topics, add "in simple terms" or "as if explaining to a child." Claude will adjust its language accordingly.

Tip 3: Ask Again — It's Always OK

If you don't understand the first explanation, just say "Can you explain that more simply?" Claude will happily rephrase. There's no limit to how many times you can ask.

Tip 4: Continue the Conversation

Claude remembers what you've been talking about. You can say things like "Can you turn that recipe into a shopping list?" and it will understand the context.
