You Don't Need Any Special Knowledge for That First Message
I still remember opening Claude for the first time and freezing in front of the empty text box. These days, as an indie developer, I talk with AI almost every working day — but that very first message had me wondering, "What am I supposed to type?" Let me save you the worry: there is no right answer. "Hello" is enough to start a conversation.
This page walks you through exactly three things: creating an account, sending a message, and getting a reply. Every step is explained so that even readers who rarely touch new apps won't get lost. If you can send a text message, you can do this.
Three Simple Steps to Get Started
Step 1: Open the Claude Website
Open your web browser — Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or whatever you normally use — and go to:

Type this address into the bar at the top of your browser and press Enter. You'll see Claude's welcome page.
Step 2: Create Your Account
You'll see a "Sign Up" or "Get Started" button on the page.
If you have a Google account (Gmail): Click "Continue with Google" — it's the easiest way. Just select your Gmail address and you're done.
If you don't have a Google account: You can sign up with any email address. You'll receive a verification code via email — enter that code on the screen and you're all set.

4. Agree to the terms of service
5. Done! You can start chatting immediately

Step 3: Say Hello to Claude
Once you're logged in, you'll see a text box at the bottom of the screen. Type your message there and press the send button. That's it — you're chatting with AI.
Start with something simple, like a greeting.
You Can Write the Way You Normally Write
One worry I hear often from beginners: "Do I need to phrase things perfectly?" You don't. Claude understands casual language, formal language, and everything in between.
It's also remarkably forgiving of typos. When I'm in a hurry, I sometimes fire off hastily written questions full of mistakes, and Claude still works out what I meant. Whatever tension you feel about "writing properly for the AI" — you can let that go before your first message.
Your First Chat — What Should You Ask?
"What should I even say?" is a question many beginners have. The answer is: anything at all! But here are a few great conversation starters.
Starter #1: Ask Claude to Introduce Itself
You: "What kinds of things can you help me with?"
Claude: "I can help with all sorts of things —
writing, explaining concepts you're curious about,
brainstorming ideas, translation,
and working through calculations.
Is there anything I can help you with today?"
Starter #2: Ask for Dinner Ideas
You: "I have chicken, onions, and potatoes in the fridge.
What can I make with these?"
Claude: "Great ingredients! Here are a few ideas:
1. Chicken curry (about 30 minutes with a roux)
2. A hearty chicken stew
3. Simple roasted chicken and potatoes
Which one sounds good? I can give you the full recipe."
Starter #3: Ask About a Word You Don't Know
You: "I saw the word 'inflation' in the news.
Can you explain it like I'm ten years old?"
Claude: "Simply put, inflation means prices slowly going up
over time. Bread that cost $1 last year
costing $1.10 this year — when that keeps happening,
we call it inflation. You could also say
money slowly loses a bit of its buying power."
Handy Tips to Remember
Tip 1: Be Specific
The more specific your request, the more helpful Claude's answer will be.
Vague: "Recommend something tasty"
Specific: "We're a couple in our 60s visiting Kyoto.
We love Japanese food. Please suggest three restaurants."
This is the same principle I follow in my own work. When I ask Claude to draft a description for one of my apps, simply saying who it's for and what tone I want visibly changes the quality of what comes back.
Tip 2: Ask for a Simpler Explanation
For difficult topics, adding "in simple terms" or "explain it like I'm ten" makes Claude's answers much easier to follow.
Tip 3: It's Okay to Ask Again
If the first explanation doesn't click, just say "Can you make that simpler?" Claude will happily rephrase as many times as you need. No need to hold back.
Tip 4: Conversations Continue
Claude remembers what you talked about earlier in the same conversation. You can say things like "Turn that recipe into a shopping list" and it will know exactly what you mean.
One Rule to Keep — Don't Enter Personal Information
Now that I've told you to chat freely, here is the one exception. Please don't type in personal details: your home address, phone number, credit card numbers, or passwords.
This isn't specific to Claude — it's a basic habit for any AI service. Keep your questions concrete, but blur anything that identifies you personally. "From my home in central Tokyo" works just as well as a street address. Build this habit now, and you'll be in good shape with every AI tool you try in the future.
How Far Does the Free Plan Go?
Here's the good news: everything on this page works on the free plan. There is a daily limit on how many messages you can send, but for asking about recipes or unfamiliar words, it's plenty of room to enjoy.
If you hit the limit, you'll see a message asking you to wait a while — and after some time passes, you can chat again. Start free, and only think about a paid plan if you find yourself wanting Claude every day. That order works perfectly well.
When Something Goes Wrong
The screen went blank
Press your browser's refresh button (the circular arrow icon) to reload the page.
I made a typo
You can freely edit your message before sending it, just like any other text. And if you've already sent it, simply send a follow-up message with the correction — Claude will understand.
Claude's reply stopped midway
Occasionally a response stops partway through. If that happens, type "Please continue," or refresh the page and ask again.
