Setup and context

"What's the difference between Claude in Chrome and Cowork?" — it's one of the most common questions from people just getting started with Anthropic's AI tools. Both let Claude handle repetitive tasks for you, but they work in very different places. This guide breaks it down simply, no technical background required.

What Is Claude in Chrome?

It lets Claude work directly inside your browser — on whatever webpage you're looking at.

Claude in Chrome is a browser extension. Once installed, Claude can see the page you have open and interact with it on your behalf.

What it's great at

  • Filling out forms on websites automatically
  • Copying and organizing text from web pages
  • Navigating blog or social media dashboards
  • Visiting multiple pages in sequence to gather information

Getting started

  1. Install "Claude in Chrome" from the Chrome Web Store
  2. Log in to your claude.ai account
  3. Open the web page you want to work with, then give Claude an instruction

For example, if you have your WordPress dashboard open and you say "save this post as a draft," Claude will find the button and click it for you.

What Is Cowork?

It lets Claude work with the files and folders on your computer.

Cowork is a desktop app. It connects to a folder you choose on your computer, and Claude can read, organize, and manage the files inside.

What it's great at

  • Organizing and renaming files in bulk
  • Reviewing the contents of multiple documents
  • Setting up scheduled tasks to run automatically
  • Reading and summarizing Word, Excel, or PDF files

Getting started

  1. Download and install Cowork from the Anthropic website
  2. Sign in with your Claude account
  3. Choose a folder on your computer as your "workspace"
  4. Talk to Claude like you would a colleague: "Organize the files in this folder by date"

The difference in one line

| | Claude in Chrome | Cowork | |---|---|---| | Where it works | Inside your browser (web) | On your computer (local files) | | Best for | Web services and online tools | File and folder management | | Ideal for | People who work heavily in browsers | People who manage lots of documents |

Real-world examples

If you run a blog

  • Publishing a post → Claude in Chrome (operates the WordPress dashboard)
  • Organizing draft files → Cowork (manages .docx files in your folder)

If you're a freelancer

  • Filling in an online invoice form → Claude in Chrome
  • Sorting PDF invoices into folders by client → Cowork

If you run an online shop

  • Updating product pages → Claude in Chrome (works in your shop's admin panel)
  • Organizing product image files → Cowork

Summary

  • Working on a website or web app → Claude in Chrome
  • Managing files on your computer → Cowork
  • Both? → Use both — they complement each other perfectly

Think about the repetitive task you do most often. If it happens in a browser, reach for Claude in Chrome. If it's about files on your computer, Cowork is your tool. Either way, just describe what you need in plain language and let Claude handle the rest.
